One day I will run a trashy tabloid. Until then, this will have to suffice.

Then and Now: Lucy Lawless

Then Now Article: LOS ANGELES (AP) - For someone used to confronting vengeful gods, vampire bats must seem like chicken feed. In the CBS movie "Vampire Bats," Lucy Lawless _ forever famous as the scantily clad, weapon-wielding superwoman in the syndicated action series "Xena: Warrior Princess" _ plays Dr. Maddy Rierdon, "an everywoman," as Lawless calls her. Lawless, 37, first appeared as Rierdon in April, taking on a plague of bioengineered insects in "Locusts." That movie's appeal to a younger demographic (so vital now that the CBS Sunday night movie is up against the ABC hit "Desperate Housewives") has spawned this sequel, which airs Sunday at 9 p.m Eastern. Dylan Neal reprises his role as Rierdon's husband, and Timothy Bottoms and Brett Butler co-star. Lawless has no pretensions about "Vampire Bats" having a serious message, although the two-hour tale does indicate industrial pollution mutated the bats into little monsters. "It's really fun and the people who make it are fun. They don't take themselves too seriously," says Lawless, explaining why she again signed on to play a character, who is _ bats aside _ closer to her own reality as a working mother of three. She's usually more interested in roles that provide escapism from her daily norm. Producer Frank von Zerneck says Lawless was an apt pick to play "a smart, headstrong woman, very well-trained, with connections in Washington, who really takes charge." "Lucy's got two feet on the ground; she's very, very strong and yet has a wonderful soft side that she reveals here. She's a dream to work with _ and talk about tricky circumstances," he adds, referring to Hurricane Katrina, which forced the production to move out of New Orleans. Lawless spent hours in a car with "dramatic weather rolling over us," en route to Baton Rouge, where she stayed with other crew members for a few days. Luckily, no real bats had to travel with them because the creatures are computer-generated. "Live bats are very hard to wrangle," quips the New Zealand-born actress. But one oversized animatronic bat was created. "Its mouth opens. Its tongue comes out. Its eyes bulge. Its head moves side to side. All those delicious things," von Zerneck says, laughing. Even before "Xena" ended production in 2001 after six seasons, Lawless started displaying her versatility. In 1997 she appeared on Broadway as Rizzo in the musical "Grease." Earlier this year in Seattle, she performed in a production of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Those experiences reminded her that being a musical star was her dream back in Mount Albert, Auckland, where she grew up as Lucille Ryan _ possibly a "throwback" to her great-grandmother, a vaudevillian.

Who said she gave up the role? The series was canceled. Check your facts.

    Lovely photos, by the way.

Lucy Lawless is beautiful. Thanks for sharing her photos.

I don't think Lucy gave up her role as Xena. The show was cancelled. I'm sure if they will make a Xena movie, Lucy would definetely do it again. Nobody can replace Lucy as Xena.

Blonde hair or dair hair, it fits her.

I love both Lucy and Xena!

Lucy looks remarkable. A very contented and happy woman is certainly showing through to the cameras.

I think YOU better check your facts. Xena was killed off by her now husband, Director Rob Tapert. That ended the show and Xena. The series was then repeated but they were not new episodes. They were the repeats - and were eventually cancelled. I've watched Xena during the complete 6-yr run of the series. Get lost!

Why in the world does Lucy want to look like all those sweet young blond starlets who have no personality? Xena was unique. she had a personality. She was not a part of the mob.

I agree with major. Since Xena was destroyed, Lucy has appeared in a lot of trash. It makes me sick to watch her in these dumb TV shows; what trash, what garbage. From Xena she went to being absolutely nothing. Xena was somebody. Lucy, go back to being Xena and forget posing like all those dime-a-dozen whores. By the way, your beautiful blue eyes were enhanced when you had dark hair. As a blond they're not even noticed. I used to be a big Xena fan but now I am not even a Lucy fan

You make not like what Lucy is doing or even like her but you don't have to be rude about it. Some of us DO like her and what she is doing and noone is begging you to be on this Lucy site. Why be here if all you want to do is trash her. She is gorgeous, peroid.

Yes, Lucy is a beautiful woman, no question about it.
But I wish she would go back to being Xena. She was perfect as Xena. But I doubt she will take up the role again as her husband will not let her. After all, he’s the one that killed off the series. Then they ran the repeats on the Oxygen channel for awhile and then they were cancelled. I don’t think Lucy will make it in any vehicle other than Xena. She was a fool to allow Xena to die. She had a gold mine in Xena. Now she is in so many trashy roles and getting nowhere.

Lucy, I'm sorry, but you can't sing. All you do is yell and make a lot of noise. I used to like your Xena yell. Why don't you go back to Xena and stop all this trash you've been involved in.

    Re: Comments

First of all, just because she dyed her hair blonde doesnt mean she's selling out, or trying to fit in like 'everyone else'. Its just a hair color, get over it. Besides, Lucy is a natural Blonde, she dyed it Black for Xena. Shows how much you know.

She's getting nowhere? Lucy is a married woman & has 3 children, her career is 2nd. It doesnt matter what roles she plays these days, thats not her priority. She's just doing little projects here and there - so what? There's nothing wrong with that. And last time I checked, playing a school professor wasnt exactly "trashy".

Who cares if Xena [the character] died? I applaud them for letting the character die so others wont try and profit off of the franchise and make money off of it. Xena is a legend, a myth, and has a story. She has a beginning, middle, and an end. Batman, Superman, Spiderman, any other hero you name, have a beginning, and lots of middle. That is all. They never let them die. Be happy they didnt do that with Xena. How many more adventures could she possibly have? I dont want to see Xena: Warrior Grandma.

She should go "back to Xena"? Do you really expect her to play Xena forever? Its actually quite funny (and contradictorial) how you say you want her to 'go somewhere' - it seems your definition of 'going somewhere' is going backwards.

Going back to the role that made her famous doesnt seem like 'going somewhere' to me. And if there is indeed a Xena movie, of course yes no one but Lucy could play her, but if there's not, than oh well.
