'Deep Throat' comes forward

Former FBI Director Tells Magazine He Is 'Deep Throat' Felt Tells Vanity Fair That He Gave Watergate Information To Reporters NEW YORK -- ABC News reported Tuesday that an article in the current issue of Vanity Fair contains claims from a former FBI official who says that he is the confidential source for a series of newspapers articles that exposed the Watergate scandal and led to the resignation of former President Richard Nixon. According to the article, "Deep Throat" is former FBI Deputy Associate Director W. Mark Felt, 91. Felt told the magazine that he is the background source who provided information to reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of The Washington Post -- the famous duo who investigated the Nixon administration's involvement in a break-in at the Watergate office complex during the 1972 presidential campaign. Felt's attorney, John D. O'Conner, told ABC's Charles Gibson that Felt had only recently decided to talk openly about his role in the Watergate investigation. [ABC]
